Abstract

Angeline Boulley's Firekeeper's Daughter offers a fresh counternarrative for students in the ELA classroom, opening new doors for students to see themselves and others more accurately reflected in a thrilling, page-turning novel. This article dives into the way power manifests in educational systems, and how students can advocate for themselves in such educational settings through Boulley's novel.

Author Biography

Liz Shanks is a graduate student at James Madison University pursuing her Master's of Arts in Teaching with a concentration in English Language Arts, grades 6-12. She has taken interest in curriculum, language practices in the classroom, and inclusive education in her previous areas of study. Her other works can be found in Virginia English Journal, James Madison University Undergraduate Research Journal, and The Sigma Tau Delta Review.
