Played since at least the 1940s as an intramural and recreational activity, volleyball was organized as a sport for women at Bridgewater College in the autumn of 1975. The new volleyball club was met with strong support. Thirty women participated in the first team. Bridgewater College women's volleyball was soon recognized as an official intercollegiate sport with Mary Frances Hieshman coaching. Nicknamed the Eaglettes, there were both varsity and junior varsity teams.
In 2024, Bridgewater College announced the institution of volleyball as a men's collegiate sport. The Bridgewater men's volleyball program will begin play in the 2025-26 academic year and will become the department's 25th intercollegiate sport.
