Abstract

For over 100 years, credit unions have served as financial cooperatives controlled by their members at both the state and federal levels. While member control remains a core principle, all credit unions are regularly assessed for safety and soundness, either by state or federal regulators, depending on their charters. This study presents a comparative analysis of credit union performance over the past 20 years, focusing on risk, financial performance, and productivity indicators. Using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), it explores differences between state and federal-chartered credit unions. Drawing on National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) data from 2005, 2014, and 2024, the analysis identifies trends in metrics such as return on assets, loan growth, delinquency rates, and operational efficiency. Through data analysis and a review of academic studies, the research identifies differences and helps to illustrate how charter type is associated with distinct patterns in financial performance, risk, and operational behavior over time.
