Abstract
A novel reaction was observed while attempting to synthesize fluoxetine (the antidepressant known as Prozac) via oxa-Michael addition followed by reductive amination. This novel reaction upon analysis was determined to be a modified version of the Kolbe reaction that enables the synthesis of benzhydrol, benzophenones, and xanthones which have multiple medicinal uses. Optimization of the reaction by scanning temperature, solvent and reagent equivalents was observed.
