Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the role of motivation in the directed forgetting paradigm. Motivation is assessed by adding value within the paradigm. It is supposed that encoding will be better for remember and 10-valued words than for forget and 0-valued words. Also, there will be increased retrieval for high value words and rhyming words. 40 participants were presented four sets of words: two with remember-forget instructions and two with 10-0 instructions. Two sets contained rhyming words. Point values of O, 1, 5, and 10 were given for recall of correct words. Results indicated higher recall for remember, 10-valued, and high valued (5 and 10) words. Higher recall for rhyming words was not obtained.
