Abstract
2,5-dicarbethoxy-3, 4-diphenylcyclopentadienone, a precursor to poly[ (2,3-diphenyl-ppheny lene )vinylene], DP-PPV, was produced as part of a chlorine precursor route (CPR) that leads to that polymer. DP-PPV differs from its parent polymer, poly(pphenylenevinylene) or PPV, only in the addition of two phenyl groups. PPV is important for its electroluminescent qualities. Attempts were made to introduce long, flexible side chains to DP-PPV through Diels-Alder reactions with 1-octyne and 1-nonyne. This was done in an effort to increase the solubility of the subsequent derivatized DP-PPV polymer in common organic solvents.
