Abstract
The music of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) has intrigued me since I first listened to Pilgrim's Progress in my last music history class. When my voice instructor and I came across the song cycle Along the Field, with music by Vaughan Williams and poetry by A.E. Housman (1859-1936), we knew it would be a challenge to do. but definitely well worth it in the end. I have enjoyed nearly all of the time that I have put into this project, especially during my senior recital on March 22. I have learned so much, and I wish to share parts of what I have learned. I will begin with a discussion of Vaughan Williams, followed by a "look" at Housman, the collaboration of the two artists, and an analysis of the song cycle. I will conclude with some personal reflections from my experiences.
