This gallery contains some of the photographs transferred by Dr. Kenneth S. Overway to the Bridgewater College Special Collections in 2019. The images appear to range in date from approximately 1959 to 1972. Shown here are samples of images from several sets of photographs. The major themes of the photographs include Bridgewater College Chemistry Department faculty and students, visiting students engaged in the National Science Foundation Research Participation Program and a the summer National Science Foundation Institute, as well as the 1972 Interterm Class, "Environmental Contaminants and Their Measure."
Bridgewater College historian Francis F. Wayland wrote, “During Warren D. Bowman’s presidency, Bridgewater faculty members, especially in the natural sciences, received more than $116,000 in financial grants from industrial corporations, foundations, and government agencies for the purpose of research…. Thanks to grants from the National Science Foundation (for instructors’ salaries and certain other expenses), Bridgewater faculty members conducted, at the college, an eight-months’ in-service institute for secondary school teachers of science, 1959-60, and 1960-1961; one for elementary school teachers of science, 1961-1962; and a five-weeks science training program for high-ability secondary school students during the summers of 1963 and 1964.” (Wayland, Bridgewater College The First Hundred Years 1880-1980, p. 515).
For the first Bridgewater College Interterm session, 1972. Dr. Lowell Heisey offered a three-weeks intensive study course on pollution and environmental problems. Titled, "Contaminants and their Measure" students sampled and tested water from the North River and its southern Rockingham County, Virginia, tributaries. Field trips were another highlight of the class, with students visiting and comparing water treatment and sewage treatment plants as well as visits to the spark mass spectroscopy laboratory of the chemistry department of the University of Virginia and the Federal Environmental Protection Agency's water testing laboratory.
