Abstract

This paper examines how credit unions adjusted their interest rate risk exposure in response to the Federal Reserve’s most recent monetary tightening cycle. Using quarterly data from Q4 2021 and Q4 2024, the study focuses on changes in Net Interest Income per member as a measure of financial performance. Two regression models were developed—one using 2021 financial characteristics as predictors and another using a complete set of pre- and post-tightening variables to explain the change in income. The analysis identifies key institutional and economic factors that influenced how credit unions navigated rising interest rates, offering insight into their risk management behavior and overall performance during significant financial adjustments.
